Food Ads

Advertisements are all around us! What do you consider effective in an advertising strategy? Why do you or do you not buy a product? What name brands do you buy? Have you considered the generic alternative? Are you swayed by celebrity endorsements? Do jingles get stuck in your head?

I want you to find and choose an ad for a food product, restaurant, or group (print, web, television, radio ... any medium) and describe it to an audience who hasn't seen it. If you can embed it or provide a link to it, so much the better, but assume your audience hasn't seen/heard it.

Then, evaluate the ad itself for the "argument" it makes ... how does it attempt to persuade the audience to buy the product, to "buy" the argument? Is it colors, a jingle, or a familiar face? Is it a new product from a recognized brand-line? Is it manipulative or bordering on the untruthful? Have fun with this!

Visit the above website and calculate your personal ecological footprint (base it on your life at home before you came to FGCU; you may need to consult someone in your household for some of the answers.).

First in your blog entry, list the number of earths it would take to provide resources/global acres to support your lifestyle. Then, define a footprint and explain how it relates to the broader concept of sustainability. How do we use this measure to interpret our life choices? Finally, and most importantly, select one area where you can reduce your own footprint. Explain your choice and live with it for a week, keeping notes on your success or failure. You will have the chance to address the changes you’ve made in a later assignment.

Blog One: Introductions

Due Tuesday, August 30th 

Successful writers know their audience, subject matter, reason for writing, and the conventions of standard written English. If your audience is your classmates, your subject matter is yourself, and your reason for writing is to introduce yourself, what would you write? What would you chose to include and what would you exclude?

For Tuesday, write a brief (between 300-500 words) introduction to yourself so that we can get to know each other quickly. Consider what you want to know about your classmates when constructing your introduction. Remember, you'll have a chance to ask questions and respond to each others' introductions in the comments part of the blog entries.

Have fun doing this, but remember to proofread carefully. I look forward to reading these entries!
